Go, Learn the Art of Living
Pune: WHAT would be the fate of an employee who is seriously detrimental in the interest of an organisation? He would probably face the axe for his mistake. Shiv Sai Infosys Pvt Ltd, a city-based BPO, caught three of its young employees in an act that jeopardised the interest of the organisation. But, instead of sacking them the company sent the boys for a week to undertake Art of Living course at Sri Sri Ravishankar's ashram in Bangalore all this at the company's expense. Nikhil Baddap, Hussain Bhaldar and Nikhil, who received this unusual punishment were candid enough to tell this correspondent openly. "Yes, it is true that we fell into temptation and did something which we should not have," Bhaddap said. According to company's vice president Vishakha Agarwal, sacking them was an easy way out. "We could have easily handed them over to the police and sacked them. In fact, most senior officers in the company were of the view that they deserved to be punished. But we thought of transforming them, rather than punishing them and ruining their careers," said Vishakha Agarwal, vice president of the company. The idea to send them for a meditation course was first mooted by the CEO of the company Dheerajj Agarwaal, who has himself undergone an advance course at the same ashram. "Punishment would not have changed their mindset. It would have only bred resentment and served no useful purpose. We wanted to bring about a drastic change in them, hence we adopted this move," he said. Bhaddap agrees with the change he sees in himself and his co-offenders. "Seven days at the ashram changed us drastically. The course has given us a new purpose. Earlier, our idea of enjoyment was to drink and make merry. Now, we are more focused and motivated towards our job. We sleep better, and our emotions are under control," he added. Echoing similar feelings, Bhaldar said, "We are college students and we work for financial support. We made some serious mistakes. Had we been working elsewhere, we would have been punished very seriously. The company not only gave us a second chance, but also helped us by making us undergo the Art of Living course, which changed our perspective." In order to reduce stress and increase productivity, the BPO had made it mandatory for everyone to log out and practice 20 minutes of meditation. "The meditation helps the employees to overcome job related stress, disturbed sleep cycle, migraine and also backache problems," said Agarwal. The company now proudly says that the three boys have drastically transformed and have become star performers.
